‘Barbaric Beauty’
Many composers of the baroque period were fascinated by the music and culture of foreign lands and this programme brings together examples that demonstrate the huge variety of styles and influences available to them at that time
France and the fascination for lands afar
Polish bagpipes and Barbaric Beauty
Spices of the Orient, Spanish folly and curiosities from the Canaries
The far-flung corners of the Earth – the British Isles
“The London Handel Players are delighted to be celebrating 25 years of chamber music making in 2025. They will be bringing to Tonbridge a rather special programme which investigates the connection between folk and art music in the baroque period. Georg Philipp Telemann worked for a short time in Poland as a young man and was thrilled by the folk musicians he heard there and whose exhilarating playing he felt provided him with ‘enough ideas for a lifetime of composition’. LHP have brought together a fascinating mix of music with influences from across the globe.” (Adrian Butterfield, Violinist-Director, LHP)

Peter Pan
Tonbridge School presents a funny and moving version of this much-loved classic tale.
1940 and London is a city of echoes—laughter swallowed by sirens, dreams lost to the dust of crumbling streets. Wendy, John, and Michael Darling have learned to live in a world where childhood slips through their fingers like whispers. But one night, as the wind howls through broken windows, a shadow moves against the moonlight. A boy appears—grinning, ageless, impossible.
Peter Pan.
After Wendy helps reattach his shadow the Darling children are lifted beyond the war-torn rooftops, and their only escape is to let their imagination take flight to Neverland. Here, they meet the Lost Boys and they embark on a thrilling adventure with pirates, fairies and plenty of fun.
But the Lost Boys are not merely lost; they are what was lost—the childhoods that never had the chance to be. Neverland is not just a refuge; it is a remembrance. A glimpse of what-could-have-been.
And so the Darling children must choose: to stay in this perfect dream, or to return to a world still waiting for them. Perhaps Peter is not offering escape, but something far greater—the courage to go on

“It's a Knockout" with Tonbridge Lions
Over 100 competitors take part annually in the ‘It’s a Knockout’ sports day.
Having been organised every year since the early 1990’s by Tonbridge Lions, the event enables dozens of mentally and physically disabled adults to enjoy a fun games day, including a lunch with the Lions helpers.
Over one hundred competitors (some in wheelchairs) form about a dozen teams, from many organisations around the local area, competing in games that included egg and spoon races; velcro darts; and other reasonably tough but exciting disciplines.
The teams are invited to design and present ‘jokers’ to be used in one of the games. The best jokers (in 2024 it was "Blooming Carnations", by Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells Community Services) are judged by the Mayor, and the president of Tonbridge Lions, who present a trophy for the overall event winner.
Tonbridge Lions would welcome any establishment, who feel that they meet the criteria; to join them at the event in 2025 on June 20th. More details can be obtained by emailing this address: info@tonbridgelions.org

Lake Farm Open Garden
Hospice in the Weald’s Open Gardens is back!
Welcome to an exciting season of open gardens – a chance to look around some of the finest private gardens in our community.
Admission £10 (Inclusive of tea & cake)
The house at Lake Farm was formally the barns associated with Great Maytham Hall and was used to house the pigs and donkeys for the estate. There is a spring fed lake next to the house which was used as a water supply for the animals. The garden was formally landscaped by the previous owners but since moving into the property five years ago we have adapted the design of the garden to suit ourselves. We opened up the lake allowing it to become part of the garden and we reduced some of the larger flower beds. We reinstated the vegetable garden with its large greenhouse. We have also built a pool house and relandscaped the swimming pool area. The garden is planted with cottage garden plants interspersed with roses, box and various variegated shrubs. There is an orchard with apple, pear, and plum trees.

Pride and Prejudice at Tonbridge Castle
Following seven sell-out seasons of this sparkling adaptation, award-winning Illyria returns to Tonbridge Castle to celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday in style.
With her tongue firmly in her cheek, Jane Austen tells us “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Mrs Bennet certainly thinks so. So when Mr Bingley – single, young, handsome, and with £5000 a year – moves into nearby Netherfield Park, she devotes all her energy to contriving for Jane, the eldest of her five daughters, to meet him during rural Hertfordshire’s whirlwind of social balls. But even Mrs Bennet draws the line at Mr Bingley’s disdainful friend Mr Darcy despite his whopping £10,000 a year. Thank heavens Lizzy, her second daughter, finds him detestable too! Or does she…? Can she see beyond his pride – and could he overcome her prejudice – to consider a possible future together?
Bring your own seating/rug, suitable clothing and picnic. Light refreshments available to purchase. Well-behaved dogs on leads are permitted. Venue is wheelchair accessible.

If he doesn’t learn to fly, he will be left behind and his life will be in mortal danger!
Along comes a fearless field-mouse called Shrimp, whose brimming self-confidence makes Percy feel braver. Together, the unlikely pals take off on a perilous adventure that requires every ounce of courage they’ve got. How will he find his way back home? Will Percy ever see his Map & Pap again?
An uplifting children’s show for 4-11 year olds about friendship, overcoming self-doubt and trusting your own instincts. With original music and songs by Harriette Ashcroft (Mrs H and the Singalong Band), magical puppetry and a heartwarming story, Puffling Percy is bound to shake you by your tail-feathers and lift you up, up & away!

Try a Tandem with Tandem Club
For families who are interested in having a go on a tandem, we are hosting a family try-a-tandem event on Thursday 29 May 10:00 – 12:00 at Paddock Wood Community Centre Maidstone Rd, Tonbridge TN12 6EB. There will be various tandems to try out, including kiddyback tandems for a young child to ride with an adult. Help and advice available from Tandem Club Members. There will be short local rides if you want to try a tandem out on the road.
Over 200 tandem cyclists of all ages will be based at Tanner Farm Caravan and Camping Park, Marden 24 - 31 May for the UK Tandem Club’s 2025 National Rally when there will be plenty of tandems out exploring the area.
Tandems are sometimes seen as an old-fashioned kind of bicycle that your grandparents rode but tandems are popular today as the way for couples and families to cycle together.
Every year the Tandem Club organises rallies to give Members the chance to explore new areas.
“The countryside around Marden looks a wonderful area for exploring on two wheels. There are cycle tracks and off-road paths as well as quiet country lanes to explore. We have visited many corners of the UK for our rallies and this year we look forward to touring around Kent” said Peter Weeks, Publicity Officer for the UK Tandem Club.
Contrary to popular myth both riders must pedal to make a tandem go. But with less wind resistance and less weight than two solo bikes, a tandem soon eats up the miles as well as being the most sociable way for a couple to cycle together. Tandems are also a good – often the only – way for visually-impaired (VI) cyclists to ride with a sighted partner, opening the door to an outdoor activity otherwise closed to them.

Much Ado About Nothing
Pedalling from venue to venue with all of their set, props and costumes on the back of their bikes, the HandleBards are a four-strong troupe of actors who are spending the summer bringing environmentally sustainable Shakespeare to venues across the UK.
Join the troupe at the Tonbridge School Library Gardens for a bicycle-powered production of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ like you’ve never seen before. In usual HandleBards style, expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter.
And what’s the play about? Well - a group of soldiers return from the war to a household in Messina, kindling new love interests and re-kindling old rivalries. The parallel love stories of Beatrice, Benedick, Claudio and Hero quickly become entangled with scheming, frivolity and melodrama in Shakespeare’s famous comedy.
This is an outdoor production, so please bring a chair or blanket to sit on, a picnic to dig into, and dress for the weather!

Janet Young Studio Double Bill
Other Minds by Phil Holden
Directed by Phil Holden
"Can I ask you a question?" If you know you're about to lose the one you most love in the world, to what lengths would you go to ease their pain.....or yours? A rehearsed reading of a brand new play presenting three scenes from the lives of three people. A randomoised trial. An experiment in love and life and the mind.
Constellations by Nick Payne
Directed by Fiona Dunn
Roland and Marianne meet at a barbeque. In that single moment, an unfathomable multitude of possibilities unfolds. Their chance meeting might blossom into a meaningful relationship or a brief affair; it might lead to nothng at all. They hit it off, or perhaps they don't. They go home together or they go their separate ways. In the multiverse, with every possible future ahead of them, a love of honey could make all the difference. Inspired by the science of cosmology and quantum mechanics, with a plot that ingeniously keeps us guessing until the very end.

Trio Chagall
Piano – Lorenzo Nguyen
Violin – Edoardo Grieco
Cello – Francesco Massimino
A treat for the Bank Holiday weekend! TMC is delighted to welcome the prize-winning Trio Chagall for a special gala evening in the wonderful setting of All Saints’ church, Tudeley, the only church in the world with all-Chagall stained glass windows. The Trio was named as a tribute to Marc Chagall, who has always been a deep source of inspiration, as well as being admired for his ties to music and strong expressive power through the use of colour.
Prolific competition winners, in September 2023 Trio Chagall was awarded First Prize at the Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, China. The Trio has been announced as ECHO Rising Stars, embarking on a tour of Europe’s major concert halls in the 24/25 season.
Joseph Haydn: Piano Trio Hob. XV:35 in A major
Maurizio Azzan: ‘As if snowflakes, in rows, rose towards the sky’
Felix Mendelssohn: Piano Trio No.1 in D minor, Op.49
“Both from a technical and expressive point of view, Trio Chagall […] does not appear to be a group of ex wunderkind nor of young promises, but rather an ensemble of mature musicians, able to deeply relate with the score, regardless of the composer or period.” (Circuito Musica)
Before the concert Josephine Willoughby, from the Chagall Windows Preservation Trust, will give a short talk about the windows.
The concert will be approximately 1 hour, without an interval, followed by a glass of bubbly and canapes, and a chance to meet these outstanding artists.
Doors will open at 6.30pm.
Standard ticket £30 | Students & Under 18s £10
(Ticket includes a glass of bubbly, canopes and a programme)
Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult
