For families who are interested in having a go on a tandem, we are hosting a family try-a-tandem event on Thursday 29 May 10:00 – 12:00 at Paddock Wood Community Centre Maidstone Rd, Tonbridge TN12 6EB. There will be various tandems to try out, including kiddyback tandems for a young child to ride with an adult. Help and advice available from Tandem Club Members. There will be short local rides if you want to try a tandem out on the road.
Over 200 tandem cyclists of all ages will be based at Tanner Farm Caravan and Camping Park, Marden 24 - 31 May for the UK Tandem Club’s 2025 National Rally when there will be plenty of tandems out exploring the area.
Tandems are sometimes seen as an old-fashioned kind of bicycle that your grandparents rode but tandems are popular today as the way for couples and families to cycle together.
Every year the Tandem Club organises rallies to give Members the chance to explore new areas.
“The countryside around Marden looks a wonderful area for exploring on two wheels. There are cycle tracks and off-road paths as well as quiet country lanes to explore. We have visited many corners of the UK for our rallies and this year we look forward to touring around Kent” said Peter Weeks, Publicity Officer for the UK Tandem Club.
Contrary to popular myth both riders must pedal to make a tandem go. But with less wind resistance and less weight than two solo bikes, a tandem soon eats up the miles as well as being the most sociable way for a couple to cycle together. Tandems are also a good – often the only – way for visually-impaired (VI) cyclists to ride with a sighted partner, opening the door to an outdoor activity otherwise closed to them.
